Spinners Progress - Explorers Impress

The Under 16's season opener , a first round National Cup game against a well drilled and organised team from a higher division was always going to be a tough challenge and the team eventually went down by 49 points to 31.

With 50% of the squad being new to the club this season and playing their first competitive game for the club it took a while for the Explorers to find their stride which found them trailing by 16 points to 4 at the end of the first quarter. This was a deficit which Explorers never got back but proved far more competitive for the rest of the game and heads were kept high where other may have shrunk away from the challenge . A stronger second quarter as the team started to gel and some strong and aggressive driving into the key saw the Spinners accumulate Team fouls which meant every foul sent Explorers to the Free Throw line which restricted the half time score to 14 v 28 .

The Explorers Motion offence saw regular substitutions to keep the tempo high and ensure the whole squad got gametime with some impressive debuts from the new recruits . This lead to the closest of the four quarters with the quarter a closer 8 v 9 which led to a 22 v 37 Score by the end of the quarter .Strong defence by te Explorers was very much on show with Spinners being kept out of the key for long periods and restricted to outside shooting on many attacks. Defensive pressure by the Explorers saw several Spinners attacks end in errors and misplaced passes.
Although an eventual loss of 31 v 49 to a team from a good team from a higher division . Testament to the hard work and determination of the newly assembled squad meant a defect of 12 points at the end of the first quarter had only grown to 18 points by the end .
