Perfect Start to New Year Continues for Explorers with Win at Tameside
Explorers went on the road again when they travelled to Tameside and came home with a well deserved victory against a strong home team who had previously only lost one game alll season.
Opening the game with a 3 point basket by captain Eugene Andrew the Explorers were never headed in the first quarter after building a seven point lead midway through before the home team pegged them back to one before Andrew again scored a three to finish the quarter leading 20-16.
an 8-0 run in the first two minutes saw them take the lead for the first time in the game which they held until a three pointer by star guard Nathaniel Akins put the Explorers back in front with 3.42 left in the half which they were never to relinquish again inthe match.
Leading 43-40 at the half a 10-2 run by the visitors stretched their lead to eleven with forward Cyrus Dennis scoring freely.Third Quarter team fouls now started to hurt the hosts allowing Akins to be 100% from the free throw line in the quarter scoring 8 from 8 to keep the scoreboard ticking overin the Explorers favour.
Entering the last quarter leading by eleven and Dennis fouled out at the end of the third Tameside got within three with four minutes to go,the Explorers then dug in and dominated the defensive boards giving the home team no second chances,the home team then had to resort to fouls to try and keep inthe game but this time it was power forward Eddie Davis who converted 8 of 9 from the free throw line backed up by Akins also scoring crucial baskets at the end.
Double Doubles by Akins 31pts 10 rebounds,Davis 23pts 14 rebs,and Andrew 10pts 10rebs,backed up by 18pts from Dennis led to a comfortable win for the Explorers,giving them a 5-5 record for the season and boosting their play-off hopes.
